Los diferentes restos arqueológicas, encontrados dentro el término de Marratxí, dan fe que hubo poblamiento humano en estas tierras de casi todas las culturas que han habitado en Mallorca: talaiótica, romana, árabe y cristiana medieval.

Por el año 1229 los catalanes conquistaron las tierras de Mallorca que eran de dominación musulmana desde hacía más de 300 años. El rey Jaume I dividió las tierras conquistadas y al Obispo de Barcelona, Berenguer de Palou, le dio Marratxí.

La primera parroquia que hubo en este término fue la de Sta. Maria de Marratxí fundada durante el siglo XIII. El actual templo de Sant Marçal, en Sa Cabaneta, fue edificado al final de siglo XVII y desde el primer momento fue un lugar de romería por reunir a la gente en torno a la devoción del patrón de Marratxí.

Durante los siglos XVIII y XIX hay un aumento de la población y se forman los diferentes pueblos de Marratxí: Pòrtol, Sa Cabaneta, Es Pla de na Tesa y Es Pont d’ Inca.

En Son Bonet, entre Es Pont d’Inca y Es Pla de na Tesa, se construió el primer aeropuerto civil de Mallorca hasta que en los años 60 fue trasladado a Son Sant Joan.
