Alcudia is one of the most ancient towns of the island.
In fact the town was founded by the Romans in the 2nd
century BC. Many things have changed since the Romans
settled in Majorca and Alcudia is today one of the most
important tourist centres of the Balearic Islands. This
is due thanks to the privileged geographical location of
the town. It is located facing a sensational natural bay
that stands out for its immense sandy beach and
transparent waters. This beach has become the major
attraction of Alcudia and has another interesting
condition. It has shallow waters until very far into the
sea, which makes this beach the safest for the family
with children. In the same bay is found the Port of
Alcudia that used to be long time ago a fishing port.
Nowadays it has become a prolongation of the tourist
urban area.
The port is heavily developed and lives exclusively from
tourism income. The town of Alcudia has preserved part
of its original walls, some of, which show traces of
Muslim culture, although most parts have been reformed
in the past centuries. The eastern doors of the city,
name Xara, stand out together with those of geh estern
part known as San Sebastián.
Half way between the town and the port of Alcudia stands
a small gothic-styled temple worth visiting known as
Chapel of Santa Aina (13th century). Alcudia also shares
with Muro and Sa Pobla de nature reserve of
s'Albufera. It consists swamp and marshlands of great
environmental value. |
