Many archaeological sites are located in the
municipality of Artà giving testimony of the rich past
of this region situated at 63 kilometers from Palma.
Worth visiting is a settlement known as "Ses Païses" and
the fortified walls surrounding the "Almudaina". Once
within the wall there is a sanctuary known as "Sant
Salvador". Also in town are found the Museo Arqueológico,
the cloister of "Sant Francesc" (17th century) and the
parish church built in 1563. On the coast are worth
visiting the "Colonia de Sant Pere, the beaches of Cala
Torta, Sa Canova, Es Matzocx and Caló.There are also
some attractive and formidable natural caves (know as
"Cuevas de Artà"), which offer a real show of rock
formations. The large and deep halls of the cave,
festooned with impressive forests of stalactites and
other geological marvels, are a unique experience for
the visitor. Very famous also are the festivities of "Sant
Antoni" on the 17th of January, which are celebrated
with bonfires, parades and processions. |
