Deià is
one of Majorca’s most picturesque villages. It is a small hamlet built
on the hills of “Serra de Tramuntana” (mountain range), with small
traditional houses scattered in the calmness of an idyllic environment,
true Christmas scenery. This irresistible enchantment did not passed
unnoticed by the world of the arts. Painters and artists of all
creativity have always frequently visited the village. Perhaps the best
know in this sense was the British writer Robert Graves, who was twenty
years old when he arrived at Deia, an lies buried in its cemetery today,
net to the tiny local church. This church was built as a fortified
construction to defend the hamlet from the Muslim invaders.
What is most attractive in this village is the village itself. It has
barely changed with time and is a perfect example of how Majorca was in
the past. There are many attractive places in the village surroundings
too, far away from the built areas, such as a small pebble cove where
original native fisherman’s huts are found next to some really
outstanding restaurants with views on the sea. |
