Inca is the most important town in region known as
Raiguer. Situated in an intermediate zone between
mountains and plains, it is one of the richest regions
of the island. Inca's (23000 inhabitants) main industry
is leather-manufactured goods, especially shoes, clothes
and accessories. In the region of Inca the leather
industry goes way back in the 18th century. The oldest
part of the primitive built-up area, the convent of Sant
Francesc (14th century) and the convent of Sant Jeroni.
Today the nuns of this convent prepare some sweets know
as concos. Another interesting visit is the church of
Santa Maria la Major, originally of gothic style but
altered in the 18th century following the Baroque
influence of the period.
Nevertheless its Gothic altarpiece is worth a close
observation. This is a great moment to enjoy the
island's best cuisine. Speaking of gastronomy the
galletas de Inca (round salty biscuits) shouldn't be
forgotten as they play an important role in the
tradition of Majorca. On Thursdays the city hall's
square becomes the scenario for an important traditional
market. In November this market is doubled as Dijous Bo,
that is the largest fair and also the fiesta which
involves most inhabitants. |
